FAQ: FAQ

What does a Physical Therapist do?

Physical therapists (PTs) are health care professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.

PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. State licensure is required in each state in which a physical therapist practices.

What does OCS mean?

OCS stands for Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. This is a certification given by the American Physical Therapy Board of Specialities. Getting an OCS certification in physical therapy says the therapist is an orthopedic clinical specialist, with an exceptional level of training and expertise. How early should I arrive for my first appointment?

To make the process easier, you can download the required Patient Forms, complete them at home, and bring them with you to your appointment. If you cannot complete the paperwork ahead of time, please arrive 15 minutes early.

What should I bring?

You will need to bring your insurance cards and a photo ID. We also need you to bring any documents that your healthcare provider may have given to you, such as a prescription, referral form, and radiology reports. If you are using crutches, braces, or any other medical aids, please bring them with you as well.

What types of health insurance do you accept?

We accept most major insurance. We encourage all patients to check with their insurance to verify that Premier Physical Therapy is considered part of their network ensuring that you will be covered for treatment. If you need assistance, please call us at 207-647-2727 and we will help you obtain that information.

What should I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and shoes you can exercise in such as sneakers. Consider shorts if you are being seen for a lower leg condition. Woman may like to wear a tank top or sports bra for shoulder or upper back conditions.

Cancellation Policy

Please call to cancel or reschedule your appointment 24 hours before your appointment. There will be a charge for frequently missed appointments.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

This depends on how you would like to pay. Maine is a direct access state which means you can go directly to a Physical Therapist without seeing a physician. Insurance policies vary on whether they cover visits to physical therapy without a referral. Some insurances such as Medicare, do require a referral. The best way to find the answer is to contact your insurance provider.  If you need assistance, please call us at 207-647-2727 and we will help you obtain that information.
